Nissan Altima Earns Top Safety Pick+

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given the 2016 Nissan Altima it's highest designation, the Top Safety Pick+.  The Altima rated as "Superior" in crash avoidance and mitigation, when equipped with optional Forward Emergency Braking.

This latest announcement, along with 2016 Nissan Rogue and Sentra earning TSP designations, gives Nissan North America's three top selling vehicles TSP or better ratings and underscores Nissan's commitment to safety throughout its lineup.

The IIHS requires a "Good" or better rating in all five crashworthiness segments to earn the "Top Safety Pick" and making an available front crash prevention system mandatory for all awards.  The five categories are: small overlap front test, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats.

Michael Bunce, vice president, Product Strategy and Planning for Nissan North America, Inc. says, "Nissan is very proud to have our best-selling vehicle recognized by IIHS for excellence in vehicle safety.  Like the new Maxima and Murano, Altima sets high standards in a very competitive class for styling, performance and value as well as safety. We at Nissan are gratified to see that another of our core models has been recognized for excellent design and vehicle safety."

Predictive Forward Collision Warning and Forward Emergency Braking
This available system uses radar to constantly monitor not just one vehicle ahead in your lane, but two.  When it detects sudden deceleration, it gives you an audible warning and a visual signal on the instrument panel.  Forward Emergency Braking keeps an eye on your speed and proximity to the vehicle ahead and can apply brakes if you fail to respond.

Nissan Aims for Ethanol-Based Hydrogen Fuel Cell by 2020

Nissan has been leading the way in alternative-fuel powered cars, particularly with the Nissan Leaf EV (electric vehicle).  Now, Nissan has announced that, possibly as early as 2020 the introduction of a fuel-cell powered powertrain, using ethanol as a means to generate hydrogen by way of a special reformer.  The fuel cell is referred to as a solid oxide fuel cell, or SOFC.

This effectively by-passes the problem of hydrogen fueling stations.  Because, let's face it, if the US hasn't been able to make CNG (compressed natural gas) readily available, then having hydrogen fueling stations in enough abundance to make hydrogen fuel-cell cars practical may well be a pipe dream.  With ethanol already accessible, being able to convert ethanol to hydrogen on-board solves any number of practicality issues.

Further reducing costs, Nissan is estimating that an ethanol to fuel ratio of 55:45 could be used.  Other attractive features of the system are than the car could use a more traditional fuel tank, and use an existing fuel-delivery system to supply the ethanol.

There are still plenty of issues to be worked out, including the heat produced by the reformer, but Nissan seems confident that by 2020, they will have a market-ready product.

Explore the Nissan Leaf

If you are looking to make the switch to an electric vehicle, you really can't do better than the leader of the EV pack, the Nissan Leaf.
http://www.lujacknissan.com/new-inventory/index.htm?search=&saveFacetState=true&year=&model=LEAF&bodyStyle=&internetPrice=&trim=&lastFacetInteracted=inventory-listing1-facet-anchor-model-7

The 2016 Nissan Leaf now boasts a class-leading 107 miles maximum on a full-charge.  Despite being one of the first true electric vehicles to market, the Leaf continues to lead the way in innovation and performance, with a new 30 KWH battery boosting range to previously unheard of levels.

The Nissan Leaf is truly an electric vehicle- there is no gas tank- so you'll never have to stop at the pump again.  Leaf owners may also enjoy other financial benefits as well- as much as $7,500 in potential federal tax credits**.

From a driving perspective, the Leaf is unlike anything you've ever driven.  Due to its unique drivetrain, there is instant torque- the power is there as soon as you you hit the (not gas) pedal.  There is no lag, no revving-up of shifting gears- it just goes!

Strictly for fun, below is a video of a Nissan powering a concert via specialized power converters (but please don't try this with your Leaf- it is not an approved use of the vehicle, and would void your warranty.  Still cool though!)

2017 Nissan Armada

The all-new Armada is built on the heritage of the Nissan Patrol, which has been a workhorse for the world for many decades. While it is intended primarily for family adventures here in North America, Armada remains true to its roots as a strong, durable and authentic full-size, 8-passenger SUV. As part of its adventure-ready spirit, the new Armada offers standard towing capacity of 8,500 pounds for both 4WD and 2WD models (when properly equipped).

Armada's redesigned body features an aggressive stance with bold V-motion front grille and standard LED low-beam headlights and signature LED Daytime Running Lights – maintaining the previous generation's rugged, athletic image but with added contemporary style. In the rear, bold combination lights include LED taillights.

Inside, the 2017 Nissan Armada sees a lot of upgrade, remaining spacious and accommodating, but adding comfort and standard convenience technologies to bring the big SUV up to date. Acoustic glass and some added sound absorption improve the interior's noise levels on the road and while idling.

Nissan Winter Warrior

I had the chance to attend the Chicago Auto Show a couple weeks back and was able to see the Nissan Winter Warrior up close and personal. All I can say is WOW! I was glad I was able to get a picture without anyone it.

A good set of Blizzaks are great for winter but a set of 121-inch long Dominator treads are better. With the Rogue, Murano and Pathfinder outfitted with the treads, the trio looks better suited for an expedition through Siberia than the stuff Nissan's SUV's are used to.
The modifications made to fit the treads are relatively simple. Certain body parts needed to be removed, like side sills and wheel arches, but the vehicles still rely on unmodified powertrains. Because of the meatiness of the treads, the suspension had to be tweaked. On top of the tire replacements, Nissan's team of engineers have loaded the Winter Warriors with a variety of accessories including cargo area protectors, roof rail crossbars, all-season floor mats and rear bumper protectors. For those hardcore winter camping enthusiasts, each Winter Warrior features a 9x9-foot hatch. Nissan Design America (NDA) created identical, custom matte red-chrome body wraps that features a unique "track" design and Nissan's "Winter Warrior" signage.

With a solid Nissan foundation and exception ground clearance, these Winter Warriors are anything but ordinary. They are serious, extreme weather machines, not toys. But they are just as fun to drive as any of Nissan's family adventure ready Pathfinders, Rogues and Muranos.

2016 Nissan Titan XD

The Nissan Titan XD only went on sale in December, but it's already collecting awards. AutoGuide.com has named the 2016 Nissan Titan XD "2016 Truck of the Year", the latest in a growing list of honors for the groundbreaking full-size pickup. The Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel bested the Toyota Tacoma and the GMC Canyon diesel for the top honor.

The Titan XD was praised for its "brawny 555 lb-ft torque" and for hitting a "sweet spot" for truck consumers by offering heavy duty capabilities without sacrificing the ease-of-use and comfort of a half-ton truck. The Titan XD offers a comfortable ride without losing the luster of driving a half-ton pickup truck. For customers who are focused on the Titan's towing ability, fear not. The Titan XD will deliver. The number of handy features like the new trailer light check system make the truck a great working companion. The 2016 Nissan TITAN XD is anchored by a powerful 310-horsepower Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel and mated to a heavy-duty 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission, and has a maximum towing capacity rating of more than 12,300 pounds when properly equipped. The additional TITAN models will begin rolling out this spring, eventually offering models that will compete in more than 85 percent of light truck segments.
